3 Tips for a Smooth Transition Back to School
As summer winds down and the first day of school appears on our calendars, now is the time to prepare our children and ourselves for this transition.
Transitions can be difficult for most people, especially children! For many children, school may be difficult due to challenges with learning, anxiety, making friends, focusing, etc. These factors can make the change back to school even more stressful for them after resting and having fun over the summer!
To smooth the transition and help your child feel more confident and prepared, here are a few tips to start now before the school year begins:
1. School Timeline Reminders
Let the child know a few days/weeks before school starts with periodic reminders before the first day of school that school is coming up! Reviewing the general school schedule and nightly/morning routines to prepare for will be helpful too.
2. Get Out and Play
Have your child play with friends from school- or better yet play on their school playground!
3. Start School Routines Early
Often children go to bed later than normal and sleep in later during the summer. Start the child's typical school year routines at least a few days before school starts. Sleep is super important-especially for successful learning- and will make jumping back into their school year nightly and morning routines easier with plenty of it!
Preparing children for transitions ahead of time is helpful at easing their stress. We hope these back to school tips help your family successfully prepare for the new school year!
